SUMMER YOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Youth Photography Workshop is a fun 2-week class led by teaching artist and photographer Kari Orvik, for young people ages 13-18 wanting to learn more about photography, including: how to use their cameras manually, how to see and use light to express their ideas, and to have a chance to discuss their work in a small group setting of their peers to share ideas and create meaningful imagery. No prior experience required. A digital camera is preferred in order for students to learn to use this tool.

DATES

Session 1:
8 sessions over 2 weeks, June 21-28
Monday-Thursday, 9:30am -12pm

LOCATION: San Francisco
A hybrid model of 5 online workshops to discuss concepts and share work, and 3 in-person field trip meetings for hands-on learning.
 
Monday 6/21 (Zoom), Tuesday 6/22 (McLaren Park), Wednesday 6/23 (Zoom), Thursday 6/24 (McLaren Park),
-Weekend photo assignment
Monday June 25 (Zoom, look at weekend work), Tuesday 6/26 (McLaren Park), Wednesday 6/27 (Zoom to edit final work)
Thursday June 28 (final presentations and discussion on Zoom)

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN 
- How to shoot in manual mode (f-stops + shutter speeds + exposure principles)
- How to see different qualities of light
- Composition + Design
- Finding inspiration and telling a story
- Technical + Conceptual assignments

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Digital SLR camera or mirrorless camera that is able to shoot in Manual mode. (feel free to ask any questions about whether a camera you already own will work, or for resources to purchase affordable an digital camera)
- A positive attitude and some curiosity!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Kari has operated a portrait studio specializing in historic photographic processes for the last 7 years in San Francisco, and has shot for editorial, commercial and artist commissions. Over the last 7 years she has taught college-age students at the San Francisco Art Institute, UC Berkeley, City College of San Francisco, as well as middle school and teen students at the  California College of the Arts Youth Artist Studio Program.
Whether shooting or teaching, photography has been a deeply personal way for Kari to engage with her community and share the skills and creative thinking that can enable people of all ages to connect with their ideas and their passions through photography.
